In this quick walkthrough we're going show you how to launch the ControlUp Advanced Monitoring for Horizon as a Remote Application from TestDrive.

Overview


  • Section 1: Login to TestDrive.

  • Section 2: Launch the ControlUp Real Time Console as a Horizon Remote Application.

  • Section 3: Create a ControlUp Account then sign into the ControlUp Console.

  • Section 4: Sign in with Existing ControlUp Account.

  • Section 5: Configure Display Settings.

Before you Begin


In order to complete this product walkthrough please make sure you have the following:

  • A valid account in the VMware TestDrive environment, sign up here if you do not have one.

  • TCP & UDP ports 80, 443, 8443; and if using PCoIP, both TCP & UDP 4172

  • Latest Horizon Client installed, available via direct download here

Here is a brief video introduction to ControlUp.

This short video highlights the value of real time data collection for VMware Horizon vs the historical data reporting you find in most other EUC monitoring tools.

Section 1: Login to TestDrive

First, navigate to the TestDrive portal at portal.vmtestdrive.com. Ensure you are logged in with your TestDrive account. From the Portal homepage, navigate to Horizon and click "Launch" on the right.

Under Native Client, click on the America Region.

If you have the native Horizon Client installed, clicking this link will automatically populate your Horizon Client with the URL to the America Region.

When prompted by Horizon Client, enter your TestDrive credentials and ensure that the domain is correctly selected as VMWTD. Once you have entered your username and password, click Login.

Section 2: Launch the ControlUp Real Time Console as a Horizon Remote Application.

After successful login, you will be presented with a list of Horizon desktops and applications. Double click on the ControlUp Console icon to launch it.

After the ControlUp Console has launched, either choose to create a new ControlUp account or use an existing account. If you do not yet have an account, choose "Create a new account" the sign in after your account has been created.

Section 3: Create a ControlUp Account then Sign in to the ControlUp Console.

On the first launch, you'll see the sign-up screen. Click "Create a new account" to get started.

Complete the new user registration form.

A mobile number is not required. If any numbers are entered into this field, at least ten digits are required. The password should include both letters and numbers. ControlUp will send you a validation email to enable your new ControlUp Account.

Under "Select a ControlUp organization", ensure TestDrive-vmwtd.com is chosen (DO NOT choose Create new Organization), then hit Continue.

You will then be logged in to the ControlUp Console for TestDrive.

Skip to Section 5 and continue.

Section 4: Sign in with an existing ControlUp account.

If you have ever signed into a ControlUp console in the past, you have an existing ControlUp account.

If you do not yet have a ControlUp account, skip this section and proceed to Section 4.

Sign in with your own ControlUp account (not your TestDrive account).

Under "Select a ControlUp organization", ensure TestDrive-vmwtd.com is chosen (DO NOT choose Create new Organization), then hit Continue.

You will then be logged in to the ControlUp Console for TestDrive.

Section 5: Connect to all monitored resources and configure Display settings.

Right Click on the TestDrive-vmwtd.com folder in the left pane, then select "Connect" in the context menu to connect to all the monitored resources.

At the top left, click on the "Home"menu. Then click on the "Display" Icon on the far right.

The default background for the dashboard grid is "Light". If you prefer a black background, select "Dark" on the right side under "Color Theme".

Check "Enable Grouping".

Enable Grouping – shows the grouping bar above the information grid, which allows for dragging any column header to the bar to group records by that column.

Uncheck "Show Agentless Managed VMs".

Show Agentless Managed VMs – display computers discovered via hypervisors, VMware Horizon or AWS, to which ControlUp Agent has not been deployed.

Uncheck "Show Machines with Errors".

Show Machines with Errors – display machines on the information grid even if their connection status is currently in error. This option can be disabled to support scenarios in which not all machines are accessible or powered on.
