In this quick walkthrough you will learn how to navigate the different portions of the ControlUp console.

In order to complete this product walkthrough please make sure you have the following:

The ControlUp console is broken up into different sections. The screen capture below has the major sections labeled.

The organization tree displays objects added to the ControlUp console. These objects can be placed in folders.

Right-click on the TestDrive-vmwtd.com folder in the organization tree, then select Connect in the drop-down menu to connect to all the objects monitored in the organization tree.

When you add hypervisors and EUC environments to ControlUp it creates folders to place objects associated with them into.

Click the + (plus sign) to the left of the Hypervisors and EUC Environments folders to expand them. Examine the objects in these folders and their sub folders.

Expand the TD-WINDOWS10-Dallas folder and examine the contents that have been placed in this folder.

You can search the organization tree to find specific objects.

Enter AMW in the Search box. The number of objects found will be displayed to the right of the search term and folders with object that match the search term will be underlined.

The ribbon bar consists of two sections: the ribbon tabs on the top and context sensitive actions underneath it. The buttons on the lower ribbon vary according to the current view and selected objects. We will only look at actions under the Home tab.

The context sensitive actions in the Home section are divided into three sections. The left section of buttons allows you to add new objects to your ControlUp console. The buttons in the middle section allow advanced actions such as setting up self-healing actions and viewing historical data to take place. The right section of buttons affects what is displayed on the dashboard.

The lower ribbon bar can be hidden to display more information in the dashboard.

Click the arrow on the right side of the upper ribbon bar to make the lower ribbon disappear, click the arrow again to make it appear.

Click the Home tab and examine the different sections of the lower ribbon bar.

The information displayed on the dashboard is separated into columns. ControlUp collects hundreds of metrics from a variety of sources and displays them in real time. The Column Presets drop-down menu allows you to quickly key on specific metrics.

Click the Home tab. In the ribbon bar and select the Detailed View - CPU from the Column Preset. Notice how the dashboard changed.

The columns can be grouped, but this feature needs to be enabled.

In the ribbon bar select the Enable Grouping checkbox from the Display drop-down menu and examine what other checkboxes are checked.

Grouping allows you to separate and key in on objects with similar attributes.

In the organization tree right-click TestDrive-vmtd.com and select focus.

In the navigation bar select the Machines tab. Drag the Operating System column header to the grouping section. Notice how the dashboard is now separated by operating system.

Grouping allows multidimensional analysis so you can drill down into a specific subset of object.

Drag the Status column header to the grouping section. Notice how the dashboard is now separated by operating system. Expand the Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit) group and notice that the objects are sub-grouped by status. Expand the Status: Install Agent group.

In the grouping section click the X in both groups to close the grouping.

The Navigation bar allows you to see different views, navigate between your recently views and search queries on the dashboard.

The Hosts view will display the hypervisors in your environment and see their attributes.

In the Navigation bar select Hosts and enter GPU in the search box. Verify that the hosts are displayed in the Name column.

The Sessions view displays user connections in your environment.

In the Navigation bar select Sessions and select VMware View from the Column Presets drop-down menu. Group by State, you may need to scroll the Dashboard to the right to see the column. Expand the Active Group.

You can go back and see previous dashboard views.

From the Navigation History drop-down menu select the row that starts with Hosts. Verify that the dashboard now displays the hosts. You can also use the left and right arrow to navigate the history.

The Navigation bar can display objects other than Hosts. Machines are virtual and physical machines that managed or unmanaged. If the ControlUp agent is installed on a machine it is considered managed. Processes shows the process that are running on the managed machines. Accounts are established sessions on all managed computers, grouped by the username. Applications are applications that are running on managed machines. The Storage view shows the datastores on the hosts.

Click Machines, Processes, Accounts, Applications and the Storage tab and examine what is being displayed.

The Dashboard (Information grid) is the main information display area of the console. Using the Dashboard, you can display, sort, group, and filter information collected from the managed computers. The Dashboard is where most ControlUp users spend most of their time.

You can sort the information by the values of the columns.

In the Navigation bar select Sessions and select Default from the Column Preset view. Click the State column header. Verify that the columns are sorted by the state field.

You can filter the items displayed to show one or more objects.

Enter ctrluser1 in the Navigation filter box. and then double click VMWTD/ctrluser1 in the User column. Verify that the session is displayed in the upper frame and that the process associated with that session are displayed in the lower pane.

In the Processes pane sort by the CPU column.

Certain Items have recommended actions associated with them. These actions can help troubleshoot or deal with issues that are occurring.

Click the three horizontal lines in the right of the Dynamo.exe cell. Verify that you have recommended actions. These actions have been disabled in TestDrive.

Objects also have other context sensitive actions associated with them.

Right-click in the Dynamo.exe cell. View the different options that you have. Many of these options have been disabled in TestDrive.

Additional attributes can be displayed on the dashboard.

Click the Hosts in the Navigation Bar. Select vSphere from the Column Preset drop-down menu. Select Manage Columns. Enter SSH in the Available columns search box. Select SSH enabled and click Add.

In the Displayed columns select SSH enabled and click Up until it is under Name. Click OK.

Verify what Hosts have SSH enabled.

Columns can be moved in the dashboard.

Click the Installed Memory column header and drag it to the left of the SSH Enabled column.

The Pane Selector menu on the bottom left allows you to switch between panes, each pane deals with a different area of ControlUp’s functionality.

The Events pane provides a real-time aggregation display of selected events from your connected computers’ Windows System, Application and Security event logs.

Click Events, expand DCOM events.

Click the other tabs in the Pane Selector and examine their contents, then Click My Organization to return to the Dashboard.

The status bar is a dynamic display that includes information regarding your current ControlUp session.

Verify the version of the ControlUp console that is being run and who is currently logged on to the ControlUp console.
